Roulette 101 | History of Roulette

The origin of the game of Roulette is unknown, some say it was brought to Europe by Monks who traded with the Chinese merchants and others say that the French mathematician Blaise Pascal invented the roulette wheel and game. Regardless of its origins, the French are credited with developing the game which eventually evolved into the roulette game we are accustomed to today. The word “Roulette” is French and means “little wheel”.
Roulette has become one of the most popular casino games play since the 18th century mainly because of the popularity of the game with Prince Charles of Monaco and the James Bond movies. You can imagine Bond at the roulette table as the dealer keeps the roulette wheel spinning and a beautiful blonde on each shoulder. But the Prince of Monaco introduced the game to his kingdom with the hope that it would improve the kingdom’s economic finances.
The first use of the modern roulette wheel with the alternating colors and the odd/even numbers was in 1796 in a Paris Casino. The modern day Roulette table layout was found in casinos in 1842. The roulette wheel came to America in the mid-1800’s and because of the small house edge it was modified with two zeros. The American version has an extra pocket, so the odds of a player winning are not as good European version. If you play roulette, always play the European Roulette version if you wish to increase your odds of winning.
There are three forms of the roulette game, the American, European and French versions. We talked about the American and European versions, but the French version is a little different in the fact that all the numbers on the roulette table are red. The European and French table versions are the same with a single zero. The big difference is in a single rule called the Rule of La Partage. This is a special and unique rule called La Partage. The La Partage roulette rule says that if you make an even money bet, and the roulette ball lands on zero, you lose only half your bet. This rule provides a significant statistical advantage to the French roulette gambler.
